Re: Searching for a Dark Star (who isn't?) |
If 9/19/70 is the one you're looking for, and I suspect it is, the instrument in question might be a guiro. It's made of wood, is hollow, and is played by running a drumstick along it's outer surface.
There's a great picture of Pig playing one in Deadbase 9, a photo I've never seen anywhere else.

Re: Searching for a Dark Star (who isn't?) |
Thanks Reade, after I listened to the show that was suggested on the other post, I realized also that it was not a maraca, although I thought I heard one of those faintly in the background on the left channel. But yes you are right, at first I thought it might have been a washboard, but I guess that would have a different sound.
Thanks again for your suggestions. I haven't had a chance to listen to the other ones (no pun intended) yet.

9/19/70 is my all time fav...you'll love it.
10/12/68 is short, tight, 68 style.

Re: Searching for a Dark Star (who isn't?) |
Well, I've had a chance to listen to all the suggestions you guys have posted. And what a surprise...I like them all. I don't know if any of them are of the exact show that I was trying to remember, but I guess it doesn't matter, it's all good.
And I also realized that in some of the versions there are BOTH a maraca and a guiro (or one or the other). And one has little organ blips too. Dig that 60's Farfisa organ sound. ;-)
Thanks again for your help!

Re: Searching for a Dark Star (who isn't?) |
How about this one:
http://www.archive.org/details/gd68-09-02.sbd.miller.22095.sbeok.shnfEdit: Just in case you missed it - the tracking is off on the player – the Dark Star begins @ 1:50 on track one ‘Introduction.’
Track 4 (The Eleven)is also Dark Star.
Maracas throughout, complemented by some timely guiro too.
No Brent though ... :)

Re: Searching for a Dark Star (who isn't?) |
Thanks! Another good one. In fact, another great show... a little known gem (at least to me).
